Years ago, when I was starting out in my accounting career (non-taxes that is), I worked in the accounting department of AVCO. I had a boss named Alan. He didn’t pay attention to his staff, expected to meet deadlines with little time, but he was a pleasant man overall. Little did I know he was actually going to be on the good end of the pendulum compared to the bosses that followed
Then I went to work for a CPA named Nick. This man was a pervert and I have no tolerance for that behavior so I left there and got a job at another CPA firm. The bosses were Daniel and William. They were pleasant enough except that they were cheap. In the almost decade that I worked for them I got three raises. The first one was within two months of working there. Then I had to wait three years and demand one or I was going to quit, so they gave it to me. Then I had to wait another three years, demand one again, and they gave it to me. Oh, but in those 6 years, both partners bought a new house (each) and new cars (each) and they golfed—I kid you not—every Friday for 6 years straight.
Okay, so I worked for an impersonal boss at Avco, a pervert CPA, and cheap CPAs. My next boss was the kicker. Her name was Sharon and was cruel. She had a temper, was insecure about her appearances (she had issues with hairgrowth), she would scream at me if I forgot to do something she expected me to do, and would scream if I took the initiative on something. Every day I walked into the office, it was a mine field of guessing her mood and behaviors. I had to quit that job as well.
I have been self-employed for many years now but I have never forgotten what it feels like to be the employee of a terrible boss so I made a pact with myself. I would never do business with a company or a specific boss of a company that treated their employees poorly.
The reason for this blog today? I have discovered that the new branch manager of my bank is one of those bosses. I woke up this morning and realized what I must do. I must leave this bank. The Powers that Be put this manager in place and I cannot condone his behavior. Corporate can, but I can’t. I will be calling his supervisor today to let him know I am leaving the bank because of this bad boss.
Do you have a bad boss story to share?
