I agree, Liz. For me, payroll service is worth their weight in gold because of the tax burdens they relieve.

I agree with April and Patrick. I have worked at the big payroll companies and now work for a privately held payroll company who software was built off of the Millenium platform, but has been greatly expanded to include and HRIS, Employee Self Service, Onboarding, and online Benefit enrollment, etc.
From an employee's perspective, I'm happier and my clients are happier because the company cares.

We have direct communication with our tax department as do our clients (at the large public payroll companies even I could not speak to the tax department!) One of the main reasons to outsource payroll is the tax liability factor. If you can't get in touch with anyone about a tax issue, that's scary.

We recommend using a small payroll service other than Paychex or ADP. Check your chamber listings for a small payroll service in your area.

We are considering using Paychex. There's not many payroll vendors out there. We are a company of about 220 employees in 6 different states. Any recommendations? (we currently use ADPTotalSources)

Denise, I'm glad you enjoyed our blog. We have more to come with more horror stories of indifference with Paychex.

Thanks Patrick; we appreciate feedback from other payroll services that verify that Paychex's fees and customer services are inferior to their competition.

Look at a company called Planet Payroll in Dallas & Phoenix, or any franchise vendor that you can find that supports the Millennium software and has a good customer service program. Planet Payroll and other M3 (Millennium) offices often have a knowledgeable tax manager that is directly accessible to all its clients to keep things like this from happening.

Tax horror stories from Paychex is a story I hear repeatedly due to their tax office being “centrally located” in Rochester, NY and the fact that a client can’t talk directly to a Paychex tax manager and must consult with a payroll customer support rep. that has minimal training in taxes. We all know how the telephone game goes!

Paychex once offered Millennium to its "specialty major market clients" then stopped supporting it as they could not buy the company like they do with so many others. I know this, as I was one of the two employees that supported this specialty group nationwide for Paychex.

Millennium is more versatile and user friendly than the comparable Paychex Preview product and you’re less likely to get the constant price hikes from the vendors who support M3.

If you want more information on the Millennium software, contact me at Patrick.McNeely...

Thank you for calling attention to this company's completely incompetent practices. I have come to the conclusion that they only way they have managed to stay in business is to continue to raise their already exorbitant fees to cover the cost of their multitude of inefficiencies.
