Sounds like you provide great customer service. Might I suggest instead of giving them website to go to, sitting in the office with them and getting the agency on the phone to obtain the FEIN and other necessary info? Business owners have so much stuff thrown at them, it really is incredible that vendors expect owners to *go the website* all the time. It's really just a way to blow them off and go to the next customer.

I work for an "independant payroll provider" meaning not part of ADP or Paychex. I was a little confused by your article. In paragraph 4 you mention a George. who is George? After reading your article I find myself in the wierd position of not necessarily defending our dearest competitor but needing to add some insight. While I completely agree with your assertion that Paychex is "indifferent" (most of our business is from people like Bob who have been thru a Paychex hell) all business owners MUST KNOW ultimately they are responsible for making sure their payroll taxes are paid. One of the first things we do with our clients is to give them a way (web address or phone number) of getting in contact with the jurisdictions to make sure taxes have been paid on time on their behalf.

Also, payroll providers cannot act on behalf of the client working with jurisdictions to set up accounts and get ID's. That is a big no-no. We offer assistance, again, in directing our clients to the best way to acquire the ID's but when it comes to working directly with the jurisdictions to get them set up that is pretty much verboden. We make that very clear.
All that having been said, we totally understand the frustration Bob feels. We hear it from disgruntled former paychex clients all the time. It is those soft skills of adding value by communicating that make for a much better experience. One of the simplest things we do for our clients is guide them. Don't tell that to Paychex. Well go ahead. They probably wouldn't listen anyway. :-)
